In most states, the estate tax exemption threshold does not match the federal government's level. Some states, such as Florida, enjoy complete exemption from state estate taxes. While others, such as Maryland and New Jersey, are stuck with an exemption level much lower than the federal threshold of around $5 million. This disparity between each state with regards to the estate tax threshold creates an unfair competitive advantage for states with a higher exemption level, or no estate tax at all.
